Why Twilight?

As far as I know, most of us reading here are adults (at least chronologically), some of us parents, or even grandparents. We're clearly not the targeted demographic for Twilight, but we're also not that uncommon.

So, to satisfy my curiosity, share your stories here of how you found Twilight, and why you read it the first time. I already know why you read it the second and third and fourth times :)

  1. To answer my own question, I'm a big fan of children's and teen literature. I have a degree in education, but even if I didn't, I'd still read young adult books. When I heard about a supertrendy teen vampire love story, though, I rolled my eyes, and forgot all about it. (Sadly, I did the same thing to Harry Potter until around book 5. You'd think I'd learn my lesson!)

My boyfriend works with my brother's wife, and last year, he came home and told me "SIL and OtherCoworker said there's this teen vampire love story you have to read." And I thought "Twilight? Really?" It's not what I expected of my sister in law. But, a few days later, they sent home a copy of Twilight, and since I trust SIL, I gave it a shot. And the rest is history!

I'm actually glad that I rolled my eyes for a couple years. As it was, I only had to wait a couple months for Breaking Dawn. I'd go crazy having to wait years!

  2. One of my daughters left her copy of Twilight lying around my house. I ignored it for weeks. I had heard that the story was for kids and that the writing was poor, so I dismissed it without ever reading it. One day I just happened to pick it up. There was so much talk about the movie, I thought I would just glance through the book to see what all the fuss was about. I was hooked by page 3. As soon as I finished Twilight, I ordered the other three books off of Amazon. Like RainhaDo, I'm glad I didn't have to wait years for the complete cycle. I'm still trying to figure out why I'm so spellbound by this series.

  3. I ordered it on a whim, it was recommended for me on Amazon.com. I like vampire lit AND YA lit, so they had me coming and going. I ordered all 4 books at once.

At the same time, I ordered the first 4 books in the Sookie Stackhouse series (Southern Vampire). I read those first, mostly because they were small enough to sneak in my purse. Twilight sat in the Amazon box on my couch for at least 2 weeks. While waiting for books 5-8 in the SS series, I decided to give Twilight a go.

Books 5-8 took me months to get to.

  4. My husband bought me the 1st 2 books for my birthday based on a recommendation from a coworker. I had never even heard of Twilight, and I thought it was ridiculous for him to buy the 2nd book since I didn't know at that point if I would even like the 1st book. It took me a few days to start reading the books because I had other books I was reading at the time, but I finally started reading Twilight because I didn't want my husband to feel like I didn't like his gift. I was hooked by the end of the 2nd chapter and finished the book within 3 days. I just had to see what would happen next. Thank goodness my husband had bought me New Moon too because I finished Twilight around 11 PM and I had to start New Moon immediately. I'm so happy I didn't read the books until last summer because I got to read them straight through and I didn't have to wait too long for the movie to come out. I read the whole series in 2 weeks and then immediately read them again.

I'm still not sure what fascinates me so much about this series, but I'm willing to go with it anyways.

  5. I found a copy of Twilight on my little sister's bookshelf in my desperate search for a book in the house that I had not read yet.

I could not put it down. I stayed up all night reading it.

I love the intensity of emotion in this book. You really feel for the characters.
